After covering most of the MHSAA playoff run for the East Lansing girls basketball team in 2021, I knew our budget did not allow for multiple stories in 2022. But with the relationships I had built, I knew I could spend time and tell a deeper story on the overall playoff run in 2022 — the last playoffs in the venerated career of Head Coach Rob Smith.

On the men’s lacrosse beat — a big deal in Syracuse — during the first season the crease dive rule was in effect, I saw how it played out poorly. I knew I had a golden reporting resource in then-SU Head Coach John Desko, and leveraged his voice to get 16 D-I coaches on the record about the problems the fledgling rule had created.

On the football beat for a second season at The D.O., and on the heels of SU’s excellent 2018 season, I covered the death knell for the Orange’s 2019 campaign, in Louisville. This story finished 2nd in the Associated College Press Awards for Sports Game Story of the Year.

In my first year on the football beat, Syracuse traveled south for a rematch with Clemson after SU’s monumental upset in 2017 in the Carrier Dome. In the run up to the 2018 game at Clemson, I wrote this feature story about how, prior to the 2017 upset, the Syracuse players were motivated by the Tigers outbidding them for their usual pregame hotel in town.

When the Lansing Curling Club sent an email asking if ELi was interested in covering their open house, I immediately had the idea of a photo story using my Nikon D5600 (a recent xmas gift). This story is the result.

On a tip from a reader, we learned that the East Lansing football team had allegedly been subjected to racist abuse during a playoff loss to South Lyon. Upon speaking to a number of players and parents, I wrote the following report.
